Most budgets fail because they are built on guesses about spending. A budget written before you know your real numbers is fiction with a spreadsheet. This lesson explains why one month of honest tracking is the foundation for everything else.
Guesses are usually wrong in the same direction
People tend to underestimate small frequent spending, such as food, subscriptions and transport, and overestimate the rare big things. Tracking replaces the guess with a number and the number is usually a surprise.
Tracking is neutral
The spending tracker is not a judgement. Every line is simply a fact about the month. Judging while tracking is what makes people stop tracking, so record first and think later.
One month is enough to start
A single full month of tracking gives a usable picture. It will not be perfect and it does not need to be. You are looking for the shape of your spending, not an audit.
Action Step
Print the daily spending tracker and record every purchase for one full month, however small. Do not change any behaviour during the month; just observe.
