Brand Versus Logo Versus Identity

People use brand, logo and identity interchangeably and then wonder why their new logo did not change anything. They are three different layers. This lesson separates them so the rest of the course builds in the right order.

The brand is the reputation

A brand is what people think and feel when they hear your name. You do not fully control it; you influence it through every interaction. It exists whether or not you have designed anything.

The identity is the visual system

Identity is the set of visual and verbal choices, such as logo, colours, type, tone and imagery, that express the brand consistently. This is what the templates in the vault help you build.

The logo is one element

The logo is a signature, not the whole identity. A strong identity survives a weak logo; a great logo cannot rescue an inconsistent identity. Spend proportionate time on each.

Action Step

Write one sentence for each layer on the brand brief page: what you want people to think of you, what visual system you currently have, and what your logo does today.
